• Check credentials with the insurance department in the property’s state.

Questions for the adjuster

• Discuss relevant experience and ask for references.
• Confirm who will inspect the property and handle my claim.
• Ask how often I will receive updates and how to reach my contact.
• Request a clear explanation of included work and my responsibilities.
• Ask for the fee calculation, payment timing, and additional expenses in writing.

Before signing

Pause on any item you cannot answer. Check state-specific questions with the relevant insurance department before proceeding.

• Read the complete agreement and resolve blank or unclear terms.
• Understand whether the fee applies to the total settlement, existing payments, or another amount.
• Confirm what I owe if the insurer makes no additional payment.
• Check applicable cancellation rights and procedures with my state insurance department.
• Keep a complete copy of everything I sign.
